Sarah E. Auer Mini Meet
Sarah E. Auer Western County Outdoor Pool
Start: 8:30 AM
Warm-up: 8:00 AM
The Sarah E. Auer Mini Meet is for swimmers TEN years of age or YOUNGER! (Swim team AND PreTeam!!) It is an annual fundraiser hosted by the Poolesville Swim Team. Sarah grew up swimming in the Poolesville community and later went on to be the head coach of Poolesville. She was tragically killed in a car accident in 2003. Since then her family has created several scholarships in her name and this mini meet is something that helps with the scholarships. Our own coach, Morgan Howley, was a recipient of the MCSL scholarship! Coach Jonny is a teacher at Poolesville High School and is their swim coach. He is close friends with the Auer family and would love to bring a group of PW mini Demons to the meet to support their fundraiser and have a little fun in the pool! Sarah E. Auer Western County Outdoor Pool On July 17th in the early hours of the morning, out in the far stretches of Montgomery County, in the land of Poolesville (Home of the 17 Time Maryland State Champion HS Swim Team) a mini meet will be held for swimmers 10 and under. This is an optional event, it is a fundraiser in honor of a scholarship that has helped so many swimmers in our area with their college fees. This event is very near and dear to my heart. For those that do not know, I teach and coach at Poolesville HS. Sarah loved swimming. She grew up like many swimmers and swum til she graduated from the team. She was the MVP of the HS team all four years she attended (before my time at PHS), she swam for club teams, and swam collegiately at LaSalle University and Catholic University. Tragically, she was killed in auto accident in 2002. This crushed the Poolesville swimming community as well as you can imagine, her family. To create some good out of this loss, the Auer family began a scholarship fund that has handed out over 100 scholarships to swimmers on the Poolesville summer team, the Poolesville HS team, and throughout MCSL. Some of our very own Potomac Woods swimmers have recieved the scholarship for their leadership and dedication to the ideals that embodied Sarah. Over the past few years, the process has been streamlined to now focus on the community within the high school. I can personally attest that the recipients of the scholarship program represent the character that Sarah stood for and continue to serve as that fantastic role model to their respective teams throughout the swimming community. In order to continue to add to the scholarship, the Poolesville summer team hosts this Mini Meet, and is extending it to 10 and unders. Again, this is an optional event, and for the entry fee of $25, you can swim whatever events you like. Ribbions, T-shirts, and usually a swag bag of goodies are handed out, and the parade of champions where we walk around the pool and get lollipops from the Auer family. There is a kickboard race, and if you would like someone to kick with your child, I will "strong arm" one of my high school kids into swimming across or I'll do it. It's a very fun meet. If you have any questions, please let me know. In order to sign up you can email me directly and I will sign you up for whatever you'd like. If you are an older sibling consider coming out and helping me coach or help time. There are also fun things to do at the meet. Usually there is a face painting table or other entertaining things. There is plenty of places to eat afterwards... a few vineyard/wineries, beerfarm (best team lunch outting ever...forget grilling at the pool...) You could make it a day trip! Please consider the Mini Meet, for as much as few events as you'd like. Come early, stay to the end, leave early, it's all for fun. Please let me know by Monday 7/11 evening if you would like to attend the mini meet. If you are on the fence, I can probably wiggle you in since I'm "kind of a big deal" in Poolesville, plus I think I somehow volunteered to set up the automation for the meet. Thank you Jonny |
