I love Potomac Woods. I started swimming here in the Summer of 1989, and can’t remember a summer when I was not here. I have literally grown up at Potomac Woods doing everything from landscaping, stocking the vending machines, lifeguarding, managing the pool, assistant coaching, and my favorite, being the Head Coach of the Potomac Woods Demons. It has been a great honor and pleasure to work with and teach the children in our community. I hope the same passion and love for the sport of swimming is passed on to each group of kids as we watch them develop from Pre-Teamers to graduating team members.
In the other boring part of the year (who knew there were 10 other months?!?) I teach at Poolesvillie HS where I coach the Maryland State Champion Swim and Dive Team. I also coach throughout the year for Rockville Montgomery Swim Club at the Olney Swim Center.
Mara Kaplan is a rising senior at the University of Michigan. She began swimming for Potomac Woods at age 6 and this will be her 7th summer coaching for the Demons. She swam for RMSC from the ages of 8-18 and was a 4 year varsity member of the Churchill High School Swim Team. During the school year Mara coached for FINS swimming for three years. Mara received the Sara Auer scholarship, an award given to rising college freshman who have shown excellence in leadership and spirit during their swim careers.
Potomac Woods has been my second home every summer since the age of 8. I started to volunteer with the Pre-team at the age of 14 and became a junior coach at the age of 17. Over the years I have trained with the RMSC and ASA clubs, as well as with my high school team, Holy Cross, where I was a co-captain during my senior year. This summer 2019 I will no longer be swimming for PW but I am very happy to come back to coach and spread all the fun and spirit the PW swim team has to offer. I am currently a freshman at Concordia University in Montreal (Canada) where I am studying Biology and French Studies.
I swam for PW for 11 years. I started volunteering with pre-team when I was 13 years old, and became a junior coach for swim team when I was 17. This will be my first summer not swimming for PW, so I’m super excited that I still get to be a part of PW by coaching! I swam for RMSC in middle school and then for Georgetown Visitation in high school, where I was the swim team captain my senior year. I am currently a freshman at James Madison University where I am still deciding what to study, but knowing that I would love to work with kids. I look forward to an amazing summer 2019!!
